Community
We love being part of the local community.
The existing holiday lets bring tourists to the area, our weekend bar is frequented by mostly local walkers, cyclists and families and our defined crossing points have created access from footpath to footpath and have created a nice running route from Lewes!
The racecourse is available for charities and local groups to use and we frequently hold nature days where people from the local area can learn more about plant and bug life and yoga evenings for people to come and enjoy the sunsets and sit around a campfire feeling truly relaxed
We hope our proposed heritage centre will further our working together with local people and groups.
Heritage
The Legacy of The Old Racecourse
The Old Racecourse is an important part of Lewes history and helped sustain the local economy for centuries until it closed in 1964.
We will be displaying lots of memorabilia and old photos in the heritage centre so people can come and learn about the racecourse. There is also footage of the very last days racing available to see, which is quite an emotional watch!
Whilst we don't train horses ourselves, some of our gallops are still rented to racehorse trainers and we are keen to preserve equestrian usage.

Conservation
Sustaining natural habitats
Large areas of the once heavily cut grass on the racecourse have been left to grow and we have created linear meadows, full of wildflowers from a historic seed bed. These are sustaining a huge increase in biodiversity and wildlife. Being so close to Newhaven the racecourse is an important first landing ground for many birds migrating.
We are currently looking at a project with the National Trust and are hoping to graze wild ponies on the racecourse going forward to further enhance the land. Bat boxes, bug houses and an owl box can also be found around the racecourse.
